Speaking Voice Archives

It was 20 minutes into the presentation and boredom hung like heavy smoke. Some individuals fought to stay awake. Others sought to stay polite and not walk out.

Mr. Boredom continue to drone on and on. His message took off like a plane from the podium, crashed and burned before it reached the front row. A few sentences that made it to the audience floated right past the audience’s ear and bit the dust.

Though I felt like sleeping, I tried to stay awake to analyze why Mr. Boredom was having this negative, hypnotic experience on the room. Unfortunately, it reminded me of how I have also been boring at times because I have made three public speaking mistakes.

Here are three mistakes he was making and ones we should avoid as speakers.

Public Speaking Mistake #1: He was reading 90% of the time

Think of our eye contact as being like a curtain between the speaker and the audience. When the speaker is looking at the audience, the curtain is open. When their eyes are glued to the notes, the curtain is closed and connection is being lost with the audience.

A few second glances now and then are acceptable, but if that curtain is closed at least 30% of the time, your audience may lose attention.

However, great eye contact does not negate the need for compelling content.  I have seen speakers make 100% eye contact, but they bored the audience because they rambled and had weak content.

Compelling content will hold the audience’s attention. Lack of eye contact can hurt it, but compelling content is key.

Know your speech and have a a detailed outline to jog your memory.

Mistake #2: He was bored with the material

If the speaker is bored,  the audience will be also. Fascinating fact, isn’t it. We must choose topics that we can get excited about. What if we don’t like our topic? Act excited anyways. That enthusiasm will transfer to the audience.

Mistake #3: He had a monotone message, voice, and body language

Think of a great piece of classical music. The music speeds up and slows down. The volume is high and low. That variation keeps our attention. Our message should vary also. Sometimes, we tell facts and other times stories. Our voice should be fast and sometimes slow.

When it comes to body language, change it up. Step out of the podium box on certain points. Raise the hands. Step forward or maybe step back at times. As Patricia Fripp said, “Sameness is the enemy of the speaker.”

Being a boring speaker can be suicide to a speaking career and hinder our career advancement. Don’t make these mistakes and you can keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

How Do I Clear My Sinuses & Speak Clearly

Allergies attacked with a vicious force. My head felt like it was ready to explode. My sinuses were clogged like rush hour traffic in L.A.

Besides the misery it was going to be impossible to deliver my presentation in 12 hours. A Google search for “How do I clear my sinuses” yielded next to nothing.

I turned to Facebook and asked a simple question:

How do I clear my Sinuses?

Within 30 minute 15 friends shared their knowledge.

One idea leaped off the page. I had never heard of it.

Now I call it the 9′th wonder of the world. It is a  powerful secret to clearing sinuses, curing colds, conquering allergies, and helping me speak clearly.

The secret is  the Neti Pot.
Clear your Sinus Infection
Don’t let its simplicity fool you. Even WebMd has an article on using the Neti pot to clear your sinuses.

Here is the four step process that brought me immediate relief and freed my speaking voice.

Step #1: Buy a Neti pot

Every pharmacy and grocery store should have one. You can also go to Amazon and shell out $9 for a sinus clearing Neti Pot. (aff)

Step #2: Mix in some saline solution with warm water

Mine came with about 20 packs of saline. Toss one in the pot with some warm water.

Step #3: Tilt your head and pour in a pot in each nostril and let it flow out the other side

Hard to explain, but pretty easy to do.Here are pictures on how to use the Neti pot to clear your sinuses.

Yes, it feels weird and you look a little goofy.  However, it works.

Step #4:Enjoy the Clear Sinuses

This works incredibly well. Within minutes my head was clear and I could speak clearly. My presentation went off without a hitch.

Now I use this at the onset of a cold or allergies. If I am feeling a little clogged up before I speak, I’ll run two pots through. Works better than any medicine I’ve used. Much faster too.

This one idea has allowed me to keep my sinuses clear and speak at events that I used to have to cancel or irritate the audience with a clogged up voice. Be brave. Try it.

What other ideas do you have for clearing sinuses?

Find your Natural Voice in 5 Seconds

Question #29: How do I talk with a natural voice that sounds pleasant?

Have you recorded yourself? Do you like the way your voice sounds?

Most people despise listening to themselves. Why? What we hear when we talk is different than what others hear.  You may have good reason for disliking how you sound.

Many people are not speaking with their natural voice. Are you one of them?

Here is a simple way to find your natural voice, train it, and develop a voice that is easy to listen to.

Step #1: Record yourself reading a paragraph, talking, etc.

Step #2: Check out this article on the Instant Voice Press

The Instant Voice Jiggle is a holistic technique that basically gives you the correct tone focus, natural pitch level and range, and the sound of your real voice.

It is a simple 3-for-1 procedure that may give you everything “in a nutshell.”

Step #3: Practice the Voice Press for about 10 minutes.

Now record yourself again. If you have not been projecting and speaking right, you’ll notice a good improvement. Keep practicing with the voice press and you will develop a voice that is pleasant to the listeners ears. You’ll train your voice to sound the way it was meant to sound.

Combine this with other vocal variety techniques and you will develop a great public speaking voice. You will speak with confidence and power.

Tip #10: How to have Vocal Variety

In high school I was chosen to be a narrator for the spring concert. Confidently I stood on stage and delivered to several hundred people. My speech was clear, easy to listen to, but lacked vocal variety. The music director told me I was emphasizing every single word. It is like having a sentence with every word in caps.

This made me easy to understand but can quickly bore the audience.

What’s the answer?

Presentation Tip #10: Only Emphasize 2-3 Words in a Sentence.

Look at the following sentence:

To be successful you need to have goals and a plan to reach them.

If you were delivering it, you might say:

To be successful you need to have goals and a plan to reach them.

In High-school I delivered this line like this:

To be successful you need to have goals and a plan to reach them.

Every word was emphasized. You can improve your voice and vocal variety by following Patricia Fripp’s advice: emphasize 2-3 words a sentence.

To emphasize a word, change how you say it. Even pause for a micro second beforehand. This subtle shift in your voice will cause the words to stand out.

Record yourself before and after. You’ll notice the extra vocal variety and your audience will love you for it.
